Some icons have been lost to the modern world. Unfortunately the root cause seems to be vandalism.
The image on the left is of a statue by D. W. Stevenson (1842-1904) initially located in Walker Park. As a result of vandalism it removed to a new location in Heaton Park. However it was again badly vandalised and considered to be beyond repair and taken into a municipal store. The image on the right is of a model submitted by D. W. Stevenson for the Kilmarnock Kay Park memorial. This design came second in the competition (out of 21 entries), and, which was won by his younger brother William Grant Stevenson. The competition was held on 6th &7th December 1877 and the elder brother received an award of £50:00. D. W. Stevenson went on to secure other commissions but with a different design. The following collage of images shows the sad decline of a beautiful icon by Hamish Patrick McCarthy (1809-1884)
This icon may not be completely lost to public view because a near identical model can be seen atop a drinking fountain in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. |
